About toPSD

toPSD opens .procreate files on any computer and saves them as a layered PSD, TIFF or Krita file, or a flat PNG, JPG or PDF. It was made for people who have a Procreate file but no iPad: clients, art directors, print shops, and artists whose iPad broke or was sold. The conversion runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your computer.

What it does

A .procreate file is a ZIP archive of compressed pixel tiles (256 pixels square in every file we have checked) plus a settings file; the format guide explains the layout. toPSD decodes the tiles, rebuilds each layer and writes:

  • A layered PSD, or a PSB for canvases past Photoshop’s 30,000-pixel limit, with layer names, order, opacity, visibility, all 26 blend modes, groups, layer masks, clipping masks and the canvas color profile.
  • A layered TIFF and a Krita .kra file with the same layers.
  • A flat PNG, JPG or PDF at full size, and every layer as its own PNG.
  • The time-lapse as one MP4, joined in the browser from the parts Procreate records.

Built on open source

toPSD reads a file’s settings (layer names, order, blend modes and the rest) with silica, the open-source library inside the Silicate viewer, used under its MIT licence. We changed how it handles unknown blend modes and missing settings so more real-world files open. The tile decoding, which handles both of the compression formats Procreate uses, and the PSD, TIFF, Krita, PDF and video writers are our own.

How we test

Several guides end with a dated note on what was tested and what was not. In short:

  • PSDs from toPSD have been opened in Adobe Photoshop on a Windows PC, in Photopea and in GIMP, with layers, groups, blend modes and masks intact.
  • Layered TIFFs have been opened in GIMP.
  • Krita .kra files have not yet been opened in the Krita app itself. The Krita guide says so until they have.
  • Test files are Silicate’s MIT-licensed sample .procreate files, so anyone can repeat the checks.

If a file doesn’t convert the way it looks in Procreate, email hello@topsd.app. We read every message and use the problems people report to fix the converter.

Privacy, in one paragraph

Your artwork is never uploaded. If you create an account, we store your email address, your credits and purchases, and a short history of conversions (file name, date, layer count and export type, never the artwork), so credits work across devices. Payments go through Dodo Payments. The privacy policy has the details.

Questions

Who makes toPSD?

toPSD is a small independent product. It is not made by, affiliated with or endorsed by Savage Interactive, the maker of Procreate, or by Adobe. You can reach the people who build it at hello@topsd.app.

How does toPSD read a file without uploading it?

The page downloads a file reader compiled to WebAssembly, the same kind of code that runs inside a desktop app. Your browser runs it on your computer, reads the .procreate file from your disk and writes the PSD there. No step sends the file to a server.

How do you make money?

Viewing, the flat PNG, JPG and PDF, and the time-lapse are free. Layered files cost $3.90 each, or $24.90 once for Unlimited, and your first layered file is free with an account. There are no ads and no subscriptions.
