PNG to PSD converter

Drop one or more PNG files and download a Photoshop PSD with each image on its own layer, named after its file, with transparency kept. The canvas fits the largest image. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser, so the images are never uploaded. It doesn't split one flat picture into parts.

Drop the images you want as layers

  • Never uploaded
  • Free, no account

Step by step

  1. Drop your PNG files

Drop one PNG or a whole set of parts above. Each one becomes a layer. JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF work too.

  2. Put the layers in order

The top of the list is the top layer. Move layers with the arrows or reverse the whole order. The preview shows how the PSD will look.

  3. Pick the options

Choose where smaller images sit (centred or top left), a transparent or white background, and 72, 150 or 300 dpi.

  4. Download the PSD

Select Download PSD. The file opens in Photoshop, Photopea, GIMP, Krita, Affinity and Clip Studio Paint with every layer separate.

When you need PNGs in one PSD

Photoshop opens a PNG as a document with a single layer, so ten PNGs means ten separate documents. These are the usual reasons to want them stacked in one file instead:

  • Character parts for Live2D or Spine. Parts drawn or exported as separate PNGs, all the same size, need to be one PSD with one layer per part. Leave the placement on top left so every part stays where it was drawn. The Live2D guide covers the rest of the rules.
  • Print and merch files. A print shop asks for a layered PSD and you have the artwork, the text and the background as separate PNGs.
  • Asset packs and mockups. Sprites, stickers or design elements that a buyer or teammate wants to edit in one place.
  • Layers exported one by one. Apps that export each layer as its own PNG, such as Procreate’s Share Layers > PNG Files, give you a folder of images. This tool puts them back together.

If you have the original .procreate file, the Procreate converter is the better route: it keeps blend modes, opacity, groups and masks, which separate PNGs don’t carry.

How the layers are built

Part of the PSD What you get
Layer order The list order, top first; reorder before saving
Layer names The file name without .png
Transparency Kept per layer, including soft edges
Canvas Widest image by tallest image
Smaller images Centred, or at the top left
Background None (transparent) or a white layer named Background
Resolution 72, 150 or 300 dpi stored in the file; pixels unchanged
Large canvases Saved as PSB above 30,000 px on a side
Blend modes Normal at 100% opacity for every layer

The PSD is 8 bits per channel RGB, which is what PNG and JPG files hold and what every app here opens.

Doing it in Photoshop instead

If you have Photoshop, it has a built-in way: File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack, then pick the PNGs. It makes one document with a layer per file, the same idea as this tool. GIMP has File > Open as Layers, and Photopea lets you drag several images into an open document. This page is for when you don’t have those apps at hand, or want it done in a few seconds on any computer.

Questions

Can it split a flat PNG into layers?

No. A PNG stores one flat image, so a single PNG becomes a PSD with one layer. What it does is combine several PNGs into one PSD, one layer per file. Tools that claim to separate a flat image into layers guess with AI, and the guesses need cleaning up by hand.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay transparent in the PSD layer. If you pick a white background, the tool adds a separate layer named Background under your images, so you can still hide it later.

What size is the PSD canvas?

The width of the widest image and the height of the tallest. Images smaller than that are centred, or placed at the top left if you choose. Each layer keeps its own pixels at full size; nothing is scaled.

Does it change the image quality?

No. PSD stores pixels without lossy compression, so the layers hold the same pixels as your PNGs. The file is usually larger than the PNGs because PSD compresses less well.

What does the dpi option do?

It sets the resolution saved in the PSD, which decides the print size in Photoshop: a 3000 px wide image is 10 inches at 300 dpi. The pixels stay the same. Print shops often ask for 300 dpi.

Why did I get a .psb file?

A regular PSD can't be wider or taller than 30,000 pixels, so bigger canvases are saved as a PSB, Photoshop's large document format. Photoshop opens it the same way; Photopea and GIMP read it too.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The browser decodes the images and the PSD is written on your computer by the page itself. Nothing is sent to a server, which you can check in your browser's network panel.
