Which style works in which app?
Each app reads a brush image a different way: Photoshop paints with the dark parts, Procreate with the light parts, and most others with the opaque parts of a transparent image.
| App | How to add the PNG | Style to download | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photoshop | Edit > Define Brush Preset, up to 2500 x 2500 px | On white | Adobe |
| Procreate | Brush Studio > Shape > Edit > Import | Inverted | Procreate Handbook |
| Krita | Brush editor, Predefined tab, folder icon; it accepts PNG tips | Transparent | Krita docs |
| Clip Studio Paint | Edit > Register Material > Image, with the brush tip option on | Transparent | Clip Studio tips |
| As a stamp or sticker | Place the PNG as a layer in any app | Transparent |
Photoshop’s 2500 px limit applies to Define Brush Preset. Tips in .abr files can be larger, so if Photoshop refuses a PNG, scale it down first. Procreate’s import accepts a photo or a file, and its Shape Editor lets you check the result before you save the brush.
What’s in the ZIP?
| In the ZIP | What it is |
|---|---|
| One folder per .abr file | Named after the file |
| One PNG per brush | Named after the brush; repeated names get “ 2”, “ 3” |
| How to use these files.txt | The style you picked and the import steps for each app |
| Round brushes | Drawn from their settings, at their set diameter |
| Bristle and erodible brushes | Left out; they have no image |
Transparent PNGs are 8-bit gray with an alpha channel; the On white and Inverted styles are plain 8-bit grayscale. Both keep every level of the tip’s softness.
What this tool doesn’t do
- It doesn’t make an .abr file or a Procreate .brushset; it only takes images out.
- It doesn’t carry over brush settings, dynamics or textures. Texture patterns stored in an .abr aren’t extracted.
- It doesn’t read Photoshop tool presets (.tpl) or pattern files (.pat).
To check a set before converting it, the ABR viewer shows the same tips with their spacing and the settings each brush turns on. Going from Procreate to Photoshop instead? The Procreate brush viewer saves Procreate brush shapes as Photoshop-ready PNGs.
How this page was tested
On 15 October 2026, in Chrome on Linux, we converted the CC0 Myer Settlement Brushes set (148 tips) and test files of our own for ABR versions 1, 2 and 6, including a 2400 x 1800 px tip and 16-bit tips. ImageMagick read every PNG we checked at the size of its tip, with the expected color type for each style, and the ZIP opened with every entry passing its checksum. Before that, our automated tests decode each PNG back and compare it with the tip’s pixels. We have not imported the PNGs into each app in the table; those steps come from each app’s own documentation, linked above.
