How to open a Procreate file on Android

Procreate does not exist for Android, and no Android app reads .procreate files directly. You can still open one: toPSD runs in Chrome on Android, shows the artwork and every layer, and saves a full-size PNG for free or a layered PSD that apps like ibisPaint and MediBang can import. The file never leaves your phone.

Step by step

  1. Get the file onto the phone

Download the .procreate file from email, Google Drive, Dropbox or a chat into your phone's Downloads folder.

  2. Open toPSD in Chrome

Go to the converter and tap Choose file, then pick the .procreate file from Downloads or Drive. Nothing is installed.

  3. Look at the artwork and layers

The preview shows the full artwork and the layer list shows each layer's name, blend mode and opacity. The flat PNG and the time-lapse are free.

  4. Save a PNG or PSD

Download the PNG to view or share it, or the layered PSD to open in a painting app that reads PSD files, such as ibisPaint X or MediBang Paint.

No Procreate on Android

Procreate runs on iPad, and Procreate Pocket on iPhone. Savage Interactive has never released an Android version, and the “Procreate for Android” pages that fill the search results are either lists of other apps or unofficial downloads. Nothing you can install on an Android phone reads a .procreate file, because the format is Procreate’s own: a ZIP of compressed layer tiles with a settings file and a thumbnail.

That leaves the browser, which is enough.

Open it in Chrome on Android

toPSD is a website, so it runs in Chrome (or Samsung Internet, Firefox and other current browsers) on Android. Open the converter, tap Choose file, and pick the .procreate file. Your phone reads it and shows:

  • The full artwork, drawn from the layers with blend modes and masks applied.
  • Every layer with its name, blend mode, opacity and group.
  • A Time-lapse label if the file has a recording.

The flat PNG and the time-lapse video are free with no account. The layered PSD and every layer as separate PNGs need a free account, and the first PSD is free.

Getting the file onto the phone

It came by Do this
Email Open the attachment and save it. Gmail puts it in Downloads
Google Drive Open the Drive app, tap the three dots on the file, then Download
Dropbox or OneDrive Same idea: download the file, or pick it straight from the cloud app in the file picker
WhatsApp, Telegram or another chat Save the file, then find it in Downloads

In the file picker, Downloads is usually under “Recent” or in the left menu. If the file shows a cloud icon, it hasn’t been downloaded yet; tap it once to fetch it.

Memory limits on a phone

This is the honest caveat. toPSD does all of its work inside the browser, which is what keeps your artwork private, and it decodes the layers tile by tile to keep memory use down. Phones still have far less memory than a laptop. A canvas of a few thousand pixels with a handful of layers converts fine. A 16,000 pixel canvas with sixty layers may not, and toPSD then shows “Your browser ran out of memory” instead of crashing the tab.

When that happens:

  1. Close other apps and tabs and try again.
  2. If it still fails, convert on any computer (Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook) and copy the PSD or PNG back to the phone with Google Drive.

The file too large page explains the limits in more detail.

Editing the layers on Android

Once you have the PSD, two popular Android painting apps import it: ibisPaint X and MediBang Paint. Both read layered PSDs, and both guides explain what to check after import. The PSD carries every layer with its name, opacity and blend mode, the groups, clipping masks and layer masks, and the color profile. Procreate text layers arrive as pixels.

Just want to see it?

The free flat PNG is often all you need on a phone. It is the full canvas at full resolution with the color profile embedded, not the small preview stored inside the file, and it opens in Google Photos or any gallery app.

Questions

Is there a Procreate app for Android?

No. Procreate is made for iPad and Procreate Pocket for iPhone. There is no Android version, and the sites offering a Procreate APK for Android are not official. Installing their files is a security risk. The .procreate file itself can be opened in the browser instead.

Which Android apps can open the converted file?

The flat PNG opens in any gallery or photo app. The layered PSD imports into painting apps that read PSD files, including ibisPaint X and MediBang Paint, which both have Android versions. Krita also has an Android build. We have verified the PSD in Photoshop and GIMP; check the layers in the app you use.

Will a big Procreate file work on a phone?

Sometimes not. The conversion runs inside the browser tab, and phones have much less memory than computers. A large canvas with many layers can run out of memory, and toPSD will tell you so. Converting on a computer and copying the PSD to the phone through Google Drive is the safe route.

Is the file uploaded?

No. toPSD converts the file on your phone, inside Chrome. Your artwork never goes to a server. The only data that leaves the phone is your sign-in if you choose to download a layered PSD, and even then the account stores file names and dates, never the art.

Have a .procreate file to open?

Get a layered PSD in seconds. Your first one is free, and the file never leaves your computer.
